The Preamble to the United States Constitution
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the General Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America
The Preamble states the purpose of the Constitution – It answers the question:
“Why are we forming a new government?”
Six reasons are stated – one of which is to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity. This means that one aspect of this new government is to secure something that every man has been given by his Creator. One of these inalienable rights is liberty. The constitution is to secure a God given right.
Other forms of government have endeavored to take away God given rights. To secure, as a verb, means to fix or attach (something) firmly so that it cannot be moved or lost. Our Constitution is to protect, for each person, God given rights. The government does not give these rights. They are not theirs to give. The government is to secure these rights.
In order to understand the heart and depth of the US Constitution, it is wise to get an insight and understanding of the authors of this document.
Who were they? What did they hold dear concerning this life? What were their core beliefs? We will look at these authors in upcoming articles.
